OK so I didnt get an answer from my first post so I though I would re-encode an album to mp3 to see if xbmc would give the new transcoded files a correct year - the short answer is no it didnt.
I dont mind doing the transcoding if it will correct the problem.

I am using 'switch' to transcode the files. Am I missing something?
