OS X XBMC File Support

Hey guys,

I currently make use of a windows media center (running XMBC Frodo) and I absolutely love it.

Recently my media center crashed and I am thinking of upgrading to a mac mini.

My questions is: can you play .avi files via XBMC running a mac mini?
All my movies/series (majority .avi) are on external hard drives.

Thanks,

Avi is only the container. The codec inside the avi is important (e.x. divx, xvid, mpeg2). But i guess xbmc plays it.

Understood...

I just don't want to buy a mac mini and load xbmc and then have to convert all my files to mp4 to view on the mac mini.

thanks for the answer.

XBMC does away with the limited support Apple offers for codecs. It plays a host of codecs otherwise not natively supported by Apple, like mkv, flac, etc. It is one of its main strengths.
