First HTPC Build
#1
Hi all,

This is my first post here.

Frustrated with the performance of my Apple TV2 and Midnight MX2 boxes, I decided to built a proper HTPC. Please tell me what you think of the build and please offer any guidance for which OS to use.

Thanks!

CPU: Intel i3-3225
Mobo: Gigabyte GA-H77N-WIFI/A
RAM: 8GB DDR3 PC3-12800 CL9
SSD: Crucial 64GB CT064M4SSD2
Optical: Panasonic UJ240
Case: ASKTECH ALTO MINI ITX CASE NT-TX5000

Just waiting on the case to arrive...

This is the CPU fan I ordered:

I think the HW is quite good and you will be happy with the performance. It will play 1080p fine.

Looking at your harddrive I guess you are not using the HTPC for many other activities (e.g. gaming). This helps answering the question of the OS. So if you just want an easy setup, fast and stable, I recommend Linux.

I built the machine out tonight and installed OpenELEC via USB. The build and install when super smoothly. The remote control that came with the case is even recognized by OpenELEC. Unfortunately, I'm not getting any sound through HDMI. I've tried all the different combinations of output and passthough (I have my HDMI going into a NAD receiver) but nothing has worked. Video is passed through fine of course.

Please advise.

Couldn't get audio to work in OpenELEC so I installed Win7. No issues.
