i think it would be a nice feature to have a small tft as info display instead of an lcd or vfd.
nearly all systems support a second display (exept rpi) an many HTPC Cases (eg OrigenAE or Silverstone) have already build in Touchscreens.
small tfts (eg 7, 8 or 10 inch) with vga, dvi or hdmi inputs are quiet cheap, sometimes cheaper than a vfd for the usb port.
here are some screenshots from a VDR which already has this feature to give you some ideas about what is possible (they call it graphtft plugin, theres is also a graphlcd, imon and lcdproc plugin available):

They provide skins for there graphtft plugin which are independed from the main skin.
The shown skins are not that nice, i think that a good skin developer from the XBMC Team can do it a lot better than that.
Maybe the second Display shows Cover, Fanart and Playtime while the first screen shows the Movie or the scond Display shows Cover, CD Art, Track, Time and Fanart in the Background while the main screen shows the visualisation for the audio track.
They show also the complete menuitems on the graphtft, so its possible to navigate without the big screen (eg for pure audio use).
