Linux Looking for a media management tool.

I'd like to find a tool that will watch my downloads directory (on my Linux server) for incoming files, and then organize them and add metadata.

Currently our files end up in a single directory which is kind of a terror to organize by hand. Also, my wife refuses to spend time doing it for her files. I'd like to be able to specify some simple rules about where files should go. At minimum it would be great to automatically separate TV shows from movies, since (as far as I can see) XBMC's scrapers work best with this organization. If I could further group TV shows by series, I'd be content. Ideally I could also manually divide series into categories (aquateen and sealab go under AdultSwim, projectrunway and chopped go under ladyporns), but that may be too much to ask for.

Do any of you have a favorite tool that does this? I've glanced at SickBeard and TinyMediaManager, but it's unclear if they fit my needs, and I thought it would be good to just ask you all for a recommendation.

Well, to automatically separate TV from movies, i'm not sure if *any* MM could/would do this.
You probably need to have 2 distinct incoming folders at least.... for not having too much false positives (a movie vs a TVshow with only 1 vid currently)
(but interesting idea)

If you can separate first, TMM might be a good choice (yes, biased answer Tongue)
We have great CommandLine Arguments for automatisation like this... (as cronjob et all)
Just give it a try Wink
tinyMediaManager - THE media manager of your choice :)
Wanna help translate TMM ?

I don't use TMM so can't comment on that. I do use sick-beard and its great. Will download, sort, move and generate metadata. You also have CouchPotato for movies and Headphones for music.

How do you download your files ?
I Use JDownloader to Download my stuff.
Its a good Download Manager to download from different Sources at one time and to organize all the Files, if you don´t allready know it.

And in JDownloader you can set different filters (for the file Names and other categories) so that the Files will be downloaded to specific folders.

This could be an option for you.

I have a setup I like with uTorrent, but any separation would be completely manual, which is fine in theory, but hasn't worked out in practice.
I should look whether it has the feature comparable to JDownloader you mentioned tho.

@prae5: Does SB work for files that were not started via JB? For example, will it even attempt to organize a pre-existing folder full of mixed content?

@myron: I've heard that this thing will automatically detect movies vs series, but it's a windows thing (not for me): http://www.mediabrowser.tv/

I would think the algorithm would go like so: (just talking because you said you were interested Smile
* If you see something like S01E01, it's a series
* Otherwise, we're not sure. Grab the title (I imagine TMM already has this function).
* Look up the title in the movie database(s). If there's a match, it's a movie.
* If no match try the TV database. If there's a match, it's a TV show.
* If no match, then give up Smile I imagine TMM already has a no-match scenario built up.

I believe that would handle all my use cases.
