I cannot get this danged thing into recovery mode. What is the deal? Pressing the button does nothing...

If you tried to update with just the Geniatech Linux/XBMC image from Android, it won't work. The XDA Linux/XBMC would be the image file you'd want to use. It was designed to use the Android SPI.
If you can get back to Android, you should try that.

Which devices and which Linux? I have an ATV520 running Geniatech Linux/XBMC. I only use 720p resolution, so I don't know whether 1080p pushes the hardware too close to the limit.
