Avoid rockchip boxes as the Android build of xbmc work better on Armlogic chips. Also if you buy Armlogic you can flash it to linux build for even smoother xbmc. Another alternative is Ouya...

I've got a ATV520E and have zero issues with it. Havent found anything that doesnt work. Could stream anything I have via wifi but I have a dedicated cable run to the TV anyways from my previous media box so I just use that.

I got x5 and atv520e like them both but the x5 is more fun, since there is lots of custom roms
that will use true 1080 kernel.

do these boxes constantly need updating or do they do that themselves via OTA updates?

I want a box that works well with minimum maintenance.

Sorry, don't know, running both wired but the x5 doesn't have antenna so I presume it would be better on the 520e

There is no OTA for x5, I have CWM installed and if needed I update that way.
CWM will also allow you to backup and restore later if you experiment with different ROMs
The 520e has updater software but not fully automatic and I think it wipes your settings.
If you use it only for XBMC I dont think you will need to update much.

minix neo7 does OTA updating with the latest original builds but for now there are several moddified firmwares that perform better than the original ones.
Enough bugs to choose from though.
