XBMC, Ubuntu & RAR Support
#1
Can someone please explain why the XBMC that I install through Ubuntu Software Center or team-xbmc/ppa will not play videos in rar files? This version says XBMC for Debian in the top left of the XBMC homescreen and the watermark appears unremoveable. I've read this is something about rarlab and licenses and I don't really care about who can't get along; I just need XBMC to look inside rar files and play content without extracting.

Remove xbmc completely and add the correct PPA: http://wiki.xbmc.org/index.php?title=Ins...nux#Ubuntu

If you already have the PPA: Did you remember to do the following after adding the PPA?
Code:
sudo apt-get update && sudo apt-get upgrade

If you had XBMC installed via the Ubuntu repo before adding the team-xbmc/ppa, then you need to update your sources list so that the software can be upgraded to the current release in team-xbmc/PPC. Otherwise you're probably still using the Ubuntu XBMC package which doesn't include support for RAR due to licensing.

Code:
sudo apt-get remove --purge xbmc
sudo apt-get install python-software-properties pkg-config
sudo apt-get install software-properties-common
sudo add-apt-repository ppa:team-xbmc/ppa
sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get upgrade
sudo apt-get dist-upgrade
sudo apt-get install xbmc

every time I end up with Debian version. so frustrating. i'm on 14.04.

what packages does it ask you to remove if you try this
Code:
sudo apt-get remove --purge xbmc*

Perhaps you still have some residual packages left from the last install

if building it is the only way i'm totally down with that but i followed the official build instructs previously and ended up with the newest alpha which was unstable. not familiar enough with git to know how to build 12.3. is that possible?

What does
Code:
apt-cache policy xbmc
return?

That looks right, you have 12.3 from the Ubuntu repository and it is the only report you have that contains xbmc.

Try adding the repository again and then install:
Code:
sudo add-apt-repository --remove ppa:team-xbmc/ppa
sudo apt-get update
sudo add-apt-repository ppa:team-xbmc/ppa
sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get install xbmc

And do the apt-cache policy thing before you install.

Hmm, I believe this is because there is no candidate for Trusty yet.

You'll have the following lines to the /etc/apt/sources.list manually:
Code:
deb http://ppa.launchpad.net/team-xbmc/ppa/ubuntu saucy main
deb-src http://ppa.launchpad.net/team-xbmc/ppa/ubuntu saucy main

Then do an apt-get update

I haven't actually used repositories for releases older than the current distro... so I can't guarantee this will work. I wouldn't do this personally, just wait for them to update the PPA to avoid any broken dependencies.
