seems they have matched DABS price. If only I did not just buy NUC . If I got one of these, would be an acceptable replacement of the my AMD E350 box. Will I notice an improvement in speed?

Correct me if im wrong, this baytrail boxes are completely silent? Do they need a fan? My current E350 sits in a solid metal fanless case which cats as a heat sink and gets quite hot. Would this give out as much heat?

Dabs has a charge of £1.98 added so still cheaper and better customer service from Amazon.

As far as I know its fanless and has TPD of 10w. but on the heat issue I'll let the experts answer that. Also what NUC did you get and for how much. Just wondering whats best bang for your buck. I'm assuming building a system your self will be cheaper and faster? depends if you can source cheap parts course

Mark142 I notice you've already build a mini-atx system so you could source the parts from that. It would be a HECK of cheaper and better option to buy this instead of a NUC. can you cancel?

Agreed Amazon are better. have the e350 in my lounge. It was pre built but man the case gives off heat.... The case is like one of those solid metal cases which absorb the heat from the cpu. After just a couple of hours use it is hot enough to be painful to a small child and I am worried about my kids touching it when it's been on.. The company who makes them say it's designed to that. The nuc was the baytrail n2820 which is back in stock now and was for the bedroom. This one is to replace the e350 in the lounge.

I thinking I could either replace my existing motherboard with the new baytrail one and hope it gives off less heat cause the case does look nice... Or replace completely salvaging the ram and pico psu etc.

Dougie as someone who has tested these motherboards in the other thread would I notice a new improvement in performance - the heat issue aside.

I've just build a PC with the following:
Gigabyte GA-J1800N-D2H
4gb Ram
Cheap Toshiba SSD
Windows 8.1 64 bit
Wired network (gigabit) to a QNAP NAS that stores all my media files.
Connected via HDMI to LG TV

My results:
Booting / General use = Very quick - quite amazing for such a low cost / power motherboard / CPU.
XBMC (Beta2 Release: 13.0 “Gotham”) = Again very quick - plays a 16gb MKV episode of Dr Who absolutely fine with low CPU usage.
BBC Iplayer (web site version) = Plays HD programmes fine with low CPU usage.
Amazon Instant Streaming = Won't play HD streams without judder of fast moving streams - very high CPU usage.

I guess the Amazon problem is due to Silverlight not using the GPU?

Would upgrading to a quad core J2900 motherboard be likely to cure the Amazon problem?

Maybe the 1st 1.5 RAM is defected or incompatible.
Is there an Compatibility RAM List from Gigabyte?

Please update if you get this working with XBMC, especially Openelec. Looking at one of these for a Openelec HTPC. I heard it only works with Windows. thanks

At least when I had the problem, every official document said it is only 1,35V capable. I have a 1,5V RAM which doesn't work and then got a 1,35V one which works perfectly.
I have been running nothing but Linux on my Gigabyte j1800. At first it was difficult since the legacy BIOS mode didn't work, but since the BIOS update, that is no longer a problem. Before the update, it was really difficult to find an install medium that worked. The only working one I found is the bridgelinux installer. And even after I finally got it to boot, I had a hard time getting the installed Linux to boot with UEFI. Oddly enough, after the Update I can't boot it with UEFI anymore, but I don't really care since the legacy mode is working without issues now. So the only thing that could prevent openelec from working is the Kernel. Older ones don't work for baytrail and even some newer ones have problems sometimes. But why should I care about openelec when I can just use XBMC on my archlinux install? So far it's working perfectly. Even 3D is working on gotham Smile And I don't need any stuff like deinterlacing, so I'm fine with how everything is working right now.

Finally got around to installing and testing various XBMC versions this week-end
- On Linux Mint debian edition (March 2014) there were various crashes with any Gotham alphas/betas. Either from ppa repositories or by compiling from source (segfault when using the \ shortcut to go fullscreen, segfault with the media scrapper). This is all probably related to wrong library versions, but it also can be a result of the intel / mesa bugs I saw reports off for Ivy Bridge GPUs.
- Finaly tested Ubuntu 14.04 and I'm very pleased with the result. Gotham beta 4 from the unstable PPA works well, CPU usage is low when using VAAPI and even without it, 720p content is fluid. (my TV is 720p only so I don't much care for 1080p currently). I will probably switch to Mint Cinnamon when it's available.

Anyway, the hardware works well. Onboard sound is a load of crap but that was to be expected (my Hifi DAC/pre-amp died last week, so I had to be creative). Only 5 USB ports might be an issue for some but that's ok for me currently. I haven't tested fancy addons or skins so I can't debate the performance of the UI under load.

Next: SteamOS (but that's out of topic here Smile )

I don't really need to setup wake up timer via BIOS, but presence and functionality of 'sys/class/rtc/rtc0/wakealarm' (or '/proc/acpi/alarm(/proc/acpi/alarm' for older kernels) under Linux is essential for me.

sys/class/rtc/rtc0/wakealarm is present on my j1800-d2h running arch linux although I can't say if it is working. But I have no reason to use it since mine runs 24/7.

It works like a charm out of the box almost.
I updated to the F3 bios.
Installed ubuntu 14.04 and xbmc 13.
It plays everything I have is totally silent runs cool and the xbmc interface is fast.

Had 2 issues that took some time resolving but are now fixed.
The first one was getting my mce remote to work and the second was some tearing in the video.
The remote problem was solved with.
1. Upgrading to mainline kernel
Code:
mkdir -p /tmp/kern && cd /tmp/kern
wget http://kernel.ubuntu.com/~kernel-ppa/mainline/v3.14.1-trusty/linux-headers-3.14.1-031401_3.14.1-031401.201404141220_all.deb
wget http://kernel.ubuntu.com/~kernel-ppa/mainline/v3.14.1-trusty/linux-headers-3.14.1-031401-generic_3.14.1-031401.201404141220_amd64.deb
wget http://kernel.ubuntu.com/~kernel-ppa/mainline/v3.14.1-trusty/linux-image-3.14.1-031401-generic_3.14.1-031401.201404141220_amd64.deb
sudo dpkg -i linux-headers-3.14.1-*.deb linux-image-3.14.1-*.deb
sudo reboot
source http://www.yourownlinux.com/2014/04/inst...linux.html

2. Using the dkms_mceusb module instead of the one builtin the kernel
Code:
sudo apt-add-repository ppa:tikhonov/fixes
sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get install mceusb-dkms
sudo reboot
source http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=2203116

The tearing problem was solved by doing this with-nvidia-331
Code:
sudo apt-add-repository ppa:timo-jyrinki/ppa
sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get install libsdl1.2debian
source http://askubuntu.com/questions/450593/ho...nvidia-331

the only problem I have left is that the efi boot fails sometimes.
When I shutdown the box and start it up again or reboot I just get the efi shell with no boot options.
Shut it down again and it boots up normally.
Any one having the same problem ?

"I've tested Openelec wih the new fanless Bay Trail D motherboard from Gigabyte (GA-J1800N-D2H).
This board is cheap (about € 60) en works perfect with the latest beta (3.95.1).
Just be sure to have the latest bios (F3) installed.
The previous bios (F2) was horrible (hdmi not working, impossible to install anything else then Windows 8/8.1).
Those issues are now fixed.
So if you want a cheap and powerfull OE-mediacenter, buy this board !"

With HTPC usage, my little mini-ITX box doesn't even get warm to the touch, except maybe a little bit on the bottom.

Performance-wise, I've only used E-350 as a home server. However, the Q1900B-ITX I have is as responsive as can be, no lag in using any UI. The J1800 seemed fine too those the J1900 is definitely better. Both are suitable for HTPC IMHO.

Passmark scores:
E-350: 758
J1800: 1123
J1900: 2052
