I am curious about running XBMC on my TV, via HDMI, using the "pass through" sound setting in XBMC. Is this the best setup for my Surround system?

That's a very common setup with AV receivers. You would need to make sure your TV can decode whatever format you're passing through. It works very well for me and my setup.
