File server changed IP - Kodi no longer working
#1
Apologies if this post is in wrong forum - surprised there's not forum or sub-forum for network related issues

Hi all - I had a problem with my router and had to do a hard reset on the weekend which caused my file server to pick up a new/different IP. Now when i go to Kodi to play a movie or music i get an error:

Invalid Argument and an OK button

Cannot connect to network server and on OK button

Could anyone provide some guidance - i don't want to have to re-tell Kodi of new paths for all the folders and have to rescan everything

My system

OpenElec 4.2
Kodi 13.2

Many thanks

Jim

That's the reason, why I would always set up static IPs to those.

So you have to know, which IP is set in your Kodi to connect to this sever. Then you have to change the servers IP adress to a static one. I got a new router myself two days ago and noticed (even it's from the same manufactor), that the routers IP adress is changed from 192.168.1.1 to 192.168.0.1. So the DHCP range was also at 192.168.0.x. In my case, as I use static IPs for any PC/server/TV (anything which uses an IP) in my house, I have to change the routers IP adress to match the network of the rest of my devices. So I have to change the routers IP adress from 192.168.0.1 to 192.168.1.1 again. For this you have to look, what IP was given before you changed your router.

And I would recommend always using static IP adresses for servers. So you never have to look which IP is given. I created a little text file on my main PC which contains the IP adresses of any other device.

Greetings

two options:
- set a static IP on your server, as David said
- set a fixed/reserved dhcp lease for your server _in your router_

At the risk of interrupting a beautiful friendship, I'd repeat what wsnipex said.

The easiest way is to configure your router to respond to DHCP requests from this system with the IP address the system used to have. Reboot (or renew your lease if you know how), and your server will magically revert to the previous IP address, which it should keep for evermore.

This has the benefit of having static IP addressing without the client knowing anything - it asks for a new address and always gets the same one, so everyone's happy.

Thanks Prof Yaffle

I'll (try) tackle this today

I'm pretty sure the QNAP 469L was configured to have a static IP

So i need to:

1. Confirm QNAP has static IP set to on
2. Then tell the router to respond to DHCP requests from this system with the IP address the system used to have

What if I don't know the IP it used to have ?

Appreciate your input

you can take a look in your video library and the filepath in movie info. If you are a lucky one, the IP is included there.

Is there a way I can find out the IP address that Kodi is using for the file server

I went into a movie / edit source - can see the entire path but no IP address.

I've now changed the IP address to fixed on the file server (192.168.2.8) - but i don't know what IP address kodi is set up to use

so nothing is working

Belkin AC1200 DB

doesn't seem to be an ability for DHCP reservation - I've changed/fixed the IP address on the QNAP but for some reason its host name doesn't show up o the router - just blank. Apparently XBMC needs a host name - but i can no longer browse to it from XBMC Videos/files/add sources - doesn't show up any more

Any ideas ?

Solved - not sure how but was due to hostname not showing on router

I played around with it and eventually fell into place

the world's a happier place

Thanks guys
