Can anyone help me get past this?

If you are compiling master then auto tools have been removed and it now uses cmake. So he instructions are going to be out of date.

@op - Is there a distro package you can study to see how to compile/pull in deps, etc.? This is WAY more simplistic on Arch ARM; for example: https://github.com/archlinuxarm/PKGBUILD...p/PKGBUILD
