v17 Video playback stutters
#1
I am running Krypton 17.3 and have recently noticed a problem watching .mpg files recorded using MythTV running on a separate system.

I have been running xbmc/kodi on this h/w for many years playing back these types of files without a problem. I haven't changed any s/w or h/w recently other than stepping up from 17.2 to 17.3 and installing kodi-inputstream-adaptive.

The problem is intermittent and has occurred with several recordings - the picture begins to stutter and miss frames, the audio plays fine. Stopping and restarting playback sometimes fixes the problem.

A debug log is here http://paste.ubuntu.com/24923473/

Playback is fine initially then begins to stutter at 23:25 after a while I stop playback then restart at 23:38 and it plays fine to completion.

I hope the debug log has all necessary information, there are no addins configured and it's the std skin. If you require further info let me know.

That looks like a driver issue. Your gpu needs more than 100 ms for decode a single surface.

The nvidia driver is 340.102 and has been for a while so it's strange the problem has recently appeared.

Do you have any suggestions how to narrow it down to possible causes or cure?

thanks, paul

Can you try to start kodi from fluxbox? Install fluxbox, logout, choose fluxbox as session and start kodi from there?

Nope, not needed then - I overlooked that. Then I have no further idea, sorry.

Thanks.

I reverted to 17.0 and was still getting the same problem. Then I noticed that during the skipping I was getting high CPU loads (50+%) and high CPU temperatures (~90C), initially I assumed the former was causing the later. However checking syslog it seems the kernel was reporting high cpu core temperatures and throttling the clock even when not playing content so I think I have cooling problem due to the recent high temperatures in the UK.

Thanks for your help fritsch.
