VC-1 and 3D Decoding Problems
#1
I have had a long standing problem with certain VC-1 and 3D files on the Raspberry Pi 2 Model B

On VC-1 files, the artifacts exhibit weird random blocks.

On the 3D files, the artifacts seam to only appear on the frames before or after cuts. And look like sharp jagged blocks.

I have purchased the VC-1 and MPEG-2 licensing keys so that is not the problem.

The files have been tested and verified to work on other systems and setups so they are not corrupted.

I have tried nearly every available version of Kodi: LibreElec, OSMC, Xbian, OpenElec including all the latest versions. I have exhausted every possible combination of video and audio settings. The files always playback in the exact same manner with the exact same artifacts at the exact same position.

I've attached the files for reference. This is only a minute preview, but the artifacts appear throughout playback.

Is there a fix for this? Does the Raspberry Pi 3 have this problem? If not I'll look into upgrading to that model.

Thanks! Smile

I see the issue with the VC-1 sample on my Pi3. Can be reproduced with both mmal and OMX. Maybe @popcornmix could take a look at this?

I tested with LibreELEC 9.0/Kodi 18 (#0719) on RPi3+ (with VC1 codec licence) and Skylake i5 NUC (VAAPI enabled).

NUC: no issues with any of the 3 test files

RPi3+ (MMAL): artefacts are visible in the VC1 video. No issues with MKV or ISO videos.

RPi3+ (OMX): stutter in VC1 video (at 6 seconds, the same point as the first artefact occurs with MMAL), there also seems to be black frames (or very severe artefacts?) in the VC1 video not present with MMAL or NUC (visible at 18-19 seconds, and again at 42 seconds as the glass light smashes on the floor). No issues with MKV or ISO.
Texture Cache Maintenance Utility: Preload your texture cache for optimal UI performance. Remotely manage media libraries. Purge unused artwork to free up space. Find missing media. Configurable QA check to highlight metadata issues. Aid in diagnosis of library and cache related problems.

Here is another 3D file with the same problem:

I'm not seeing artefacts with either of your new MKV/ISO test files, using an RPi3+, LE9/Kodi 18 (#0720), testing both OMX and MMAL. However, I don't have a 3D display although I did test both 2D and 3D. In every case, there were no visible artefacts. I streamed both files using SMB from a Windows 7 PC over a wired network.

Please test LE9/Kodi 18 (#0720 or later) as Kodi 17 is no longer developed and there is unlikely to be any further LE 8.x releases with Kodi 17.

Thanks. Just tried the build on my RP2

I can confirm that the 3D files don't have visual corruption when played back in 2D mode (I don't think they did in previous versions either).

But in 3D they exhibit the exact same behaviour as described in my original post(s).

The VC-1 still has visual artifacts too.
