need help with connecting the mac mini to my reciever
#1
Hi,

I set up the XBMC on my mac, and it works properly.
I'm not sure what's the spec of the Mac mini , but what's the best way to connect the Mac mini to my Home theater system?
( I guess the audio output is more than just a stereo, right?)

Please advice,
Tomer

I recently purchased these for my MBP 17" 2.16GHz to connect to my Onkyo system. Works great.

I connect my macmini via my dvi to my lcds dvi input, then run my audio out to my respective dvi rca in(via a headphone jack to rca cable), my tv then outputs to my surround sound which takes care of all my audio...and it sounds nice Smile

I haven't quite figured out how to run it in hidev on the mac without it windowing on me, so I run in the full screen mode, which looks nice to me, since I rarely play hidev stuff anyways.

Just read the Mac Mini manual, you need a Toslink to 3.5mm adapter, connect that to the audio-output on the Mac Mini and you get digital S/PDIF audio output from it.
Always read the XBMC online-manual, FAQ and search the forum before posting.

Yeah, they also have some fancy usb devices you can get, typically used for musicians to get high quality audio in and out.

Why would anyone get one of those USB-soundcards just to get S/PDIF pass-through when the Mac Mini can already do S/PDIF pass-through by just plugging a toslink to 3.5mm adapter (a.k.a. "minijack") which cost less than $5? You will not get any better sound qualify or more channels or nothing with a USB-soundcard as S/PDIF is just digital pass-through. An adapter for converting a standard TOSLink connector to a 3.5mm mini-jack optical connector.

This adapter converts the connector on the end of a standard TOSLink cable to a Minjack optical plug.
There are two common types of optical connector, TOSLink and Minijack. Many smaller devices such as MP3 players, CD players, Minidisk players and some PC sound cards use the Minijack type connector.

The Minijack optical connector is 3.5mm in diameter and many devices use a multi-purpose socket which double up as both a copper 3.5mm jack and also an optical Minijack.
