Kodi 19 Audio Dropouts on Shield Pro
#31
+1 for this problem to be fixed.

Audio dropouts happen to me with high bitrate Dolby Atmos tracks on Nvidia ShieldTV Pro with passthrough to AVR. Hopefully this gets fixed soon.

If your movies are just TrueHD (no Atmos), you could just disable passthrough and enjoy flawless audio. Smile

Only difference is the Dolby light shining in your AVR.

Although I appreciate the work that has gone into this free software, it is kind of annoying. I bought Atmos speakers to upgrade my 5.1 and the shield pro to get a 'it just works experience'. So I don't want to start reducing sound track quality.

It would be nice to see some official prioritisation for this issue, even it means waiting for the next Kodi version.

This is probably related to the other AV sync problem described in this thread:
https://forum.kodi.tv/showthread.php?tid=361156

There is a fixed version available for download there.

Anyway, for 5.1 or 7.1 systems you should just disable passthrough and enable "sync playback to display". That way Kodi decodes the bitstream and passes uncompressed PCM to the AVR. This has exact same audio quality as passing the bitstream to AVR and then let AVR do the decoding. Also Kodi has much better A/V sync because it can resample the audio if needed.

Bitstream audio always runs at fixed speed, there is no way for Kodi to change the playback speed. This leads to problems if video and audio can't keep in sync.

Yes you can get 5.1 or 7.1 audio this way but you lose Atmos object based audio with Dolby Atmos tracks. So this is not a valid fix for Atmos tracks.

Hi,

at the moment there are two custom builds:

@supertoto1977 build:

https://www.swisstransfer.com/d/69ef89d6...a44264c119

@Maven Kodinerds build:

https://www.dropbox.com/sh/v3sbnts0gkzt1...2s-Oa?dl=0

Both integrated the following patch from @fritsch

https://github.com/xbmc/xbmc/pull/20127

Maven‘s Build also has the Dolby Vision capability.

I think there is a chance that these custom builds solve the audio dropouts for you. I don’t have audio dropouts.

These apps are installed side-by-side with the PlayStore Kodi. So your productive Kodi isn’t touched. You will have two or three Kodi apps installed in parallel. Nothing to loose. Wink

Try one of them or both and report here, please.

Thanks and regards Hoppel

I tried both. Neither fox the issue. The first one is not a side by side. I made a back up though so it's not a big issue.

It looks like these were meant to fix a micro stutter which is different than an audio drop out. Stutter should cause a pause in the video. I've never experienced that. Please keep us updated of they address audio issues there. Thank you for the effort!

Sorry for blowing up the thread but I can't find an edit button.

https://kodi.wiki/view/HOW-TO:Use_extern...on_Android

I am trying this as a workaround. Should let you use vlc or any other external player with Kodi. You can even have it only used for specific file types and maybe audio type (true hd Atmos). Going to do a basic setup at first then dive in more if it seems to work well.

Yes, you are absolutely right, the builds are for micro stutter. But I was in hope that this may also solve your Atmos TrueHD drop outs, which I don‘t have by the way…

Therefore I have/had the frame drops (micro stutter), when Dolby Atmos TrueHD is involved.

I still have to watch a complete movie to be sure that the fix solves the frame drops.

Sorry for the noise, but it is the feedback I wanted.

Hi,
Has there been a resolution for this?

I've noticed micro audio drop out a lot lately until this evening they seemed to be towards the end of a film.
Tonight I had drop outs all through the film not always during a big sound event but often normal dialogue a word or syllable would drop.

I have atmos 7.1 setup the AMP is capable of decoding True HD ATMOS and DCM MA  so under system => Audio => audio pass-through is set to kodi recommended and all other option here are on

anyone know if this is being fixed in the 19.2 version?

No, sadly not solved. This is the problem, if I understood it right:

This maximum bit rate isn‘t handled by Kodi correctly.

Here @fritsch described the issue:

https://forum.kodi.tv/showthread.php?tid...pid3064112

By the way… There are two threads for this issue. I described my findings here:

What is the maximum bit rate kodi can handle?

Looks like I might have to resort to plex  Sad to watch these high end Audio and Video files

I'm not 100% sure my issue is limited to high end audio but now I've highlighted an issue I will keep an ear out for it recurring

After posting I watched a second older film I don't have the audio stats to hand now it had 5.1 sound but I did notice different kind of audio drops
This might be totally unrelated and could be due the file itself
Then watched a TV episode that played OK with no sound issues

Same issue here.

Kodi 9.2 through nVidia Shield.
The audio dropouts are like no longer than seconds and by the time your like “mother $&?&3r” it comes back up but still quite annoying. Video runs flawlessly.
I myself could ignore and accept it but 2 movies (BIG transfer data) Saving Private Ryan and Justice League (Snyder cut) I okayed for my gf and she’s never seen before, just loses the “wow” factor when the beaches of Normandy are being stormed and audio cuts out.
I love kodi so it is what it is, I just hope it’s fixed soon!

There are some reports that it’s fixed by @jogal at least for the Windows build. Here you find his posts, the feedback by some users and the windows build:

https://forum.kodi.tv/showthread.php?tid...pid3065383

Maven also integrated @jogal ‘s code into his custom Android builds:

https://forum.kodi.tv/showthread.php?tid...pid3065635

Regarding Atmos dropouts give us your feedback here in this thread.

Happy testing!
