Not sure if this counts as a bug, or feature request? But it seems no matter the platform, Kodi outputs PCM based mono tracks as stereo, bypassing the center channel if you have one. However, if you're using passthrough with a mono DTS/Dolby track, the center track works just fine (since it's your receiver doing the channel mapping). As someone with a very nice center channel, I'd very much like to use it. After speaking to a LibreELEC dev, it seems fixing this on a per-platform level is semi-possible, but not ideal, as each setup/config could be different, so it wouldn't be a deployable fix

Is it possoble to get a Kodi-side feature/option to output/transcode 1.0/mono tracks as multi-channel PCM, with everything but the center channels muted? Eg 1.0 -> 3.0 (or 5.1), with the FL/FR (or FL/FR/LFE/SL/SR) channels inaudible? Your receiver might light up a couple extra lights indicating more channels, but at least the PCM output would finally be an match to its DTS-HD or TrueHD source

Or could there possibly be other solves? Would it be possible to directly transcode to mono DTS-HD or TrueHD? It would obviously be turned back into PCM again, but not until the receiver end, so it would also be appearing as a proper mono track to the receiver (or anything else in the chain)

You seem to be mixing the technical concepts of input and output. Mono as input properties is 1 channel historically so it will never be "played as stereo". On a two speaker system, it can either be played as left channel, right channel or dual mono. There is no center speaker on a two speaker system so what you really want is to ask for a specific channel mapping when setting a speaker configuration inside of Kodi. But you have not told us what your current speaker configuration is, nor if you have enabled "stereo upmix". Try setting Kodi to at least 5.1 (or 7.1 if you have that), disable stereo upmix and report back your findings, preferably together with a log file that shows what is happening while playing.

Remuxing and encoding movies isn't "official" either, but it's probably the majority of files Kosi actually see.s And surely people with multichannel setups would like their sound mappings to be the same as if it were from the disc

Eg: Casablanca comes with a 1.0 track. If you encoded it as FLAC/AAC it and tried to play it back in Kodi, you'd get dual mono and your center channel would be ignored. Alternatively, if you disabled passthrough, you would also get dual mono and your center channel would be ignored

What you want could be achieved with a DSP but the last DSP add-on was for Kodi 17 and noone has come forward since who would take on such a project.

I mean that's great for you and all, but I'd like the option to listen to things the way they were designed. Somehow I don't think the intention of Kodi is to playback things differently than they would on retail discs with licensed players, and somehow I don't think I'm the only person that prefers/would like to listen to things in their original format

It's certainly not a bug as dual mono is normally the best way to handle mono tracks for the majority of users.

Do you have the MediaInfo output any of the mono PCM tracks, and the mono DD/DTS tracks. Interested if the DD/DTS ones are really mono in that they report 1.0 layout, or are 5.1 layout with audio only present in the center channel.

The only way these currently output as Center Channel Only is to have passthrough enabled. If you disable passthrough it will output dual mono

Side note, I'm not sure if this is related, but it also seems to affect other non-standard/common layouts: Eg: The theatrical "baby boom" 4.1 mix from The Thing. If you playback the 4.1 DTS-HD track with passthrough, it outputs correctly to FL/FR/C/LFE and dual mono Lrs/Rrs. If you disable passthrough, it outputs as FL/FR/C/LFE and dual mono Lss/Rss, pushing the rear surround audio a little forward in 7.1 setups

Ok thanks for that, first time I've seen a center only layout. So yes that should probably be respected, however I would still say it's not a bug, but rather a media type not considered in the design so valid as a feature request. I still think the majority would prefer the dual mono to left/right behaviour as they are more likely to be able to handle the full frequency range better.
