ATV 2.3 auto-update nukes XBMC and Boxee!
#1
Tonight, my Apple TV did an automatic software update to version 2.3 and rebooted a couple of times. When it came back up, both XBMC and Boxee were gone from the menu. Apple Sucks! How do I reinstall, and disable automatic updates?

I would hold off a few days while the devs look into it. If you can't wait, just re-patch with a patchstick. Be prepared to factory restore if you have problem. These a recent thread about disabling the automatic update.

i repatched and rebooted. When I select XBMC or Boxee in the ATV main menu, nothing happens; the screen goes dark. When i select "Update" under either XBMC or Boxee submenu, the Launcher v.6 is shown as an available download, but ATV won't let me download it. So, repatching does not not work.

When I select "Update" from either the XBMC or Boxee submenu, a screen comes up that says:

Boxee Launcher (or XBMC Launcher of I had selected XBMC Update)
Updater
Available Downloads:
XBMC/Boxee Launcher 0.6.

I can select XBMC/Boxee Launcher 0.6, and when I do, the scren goes black for 2-3 seconds, then comes right back to it. Nothing is downloaded.

update:

Some problem with XBMCLauncher and downloading, the screen goes black when starting the update/install but will return when the download completes. But the install script does not run so XBMC.app does not get installed. Manually running the script works and XBMC can then be launched by XBMCLauncher.

The good news is r2.3 adds IR learning and I've been running XBMC on r2.3 using a Hauppauge IR remote. :Smile. Not clear yet if we can get access to more keys or not but this is good news.

davilla you are just the man i've been looking for. are you going to be further investigating the potential additional button remote support? this might be the break we need to get a native driver for IR on other macs to allow for the same thing.

I doubt it for OSX boxes, the update included an IR controller update and I've never seen an IR controller update on an OSX box. But one never knows what Apple is planning.

Where is the script downloaded to and the command to run it?

sudo find / -name xbmc-8.10_update.sh -print

one up from that path is the directory that contaings the xbmc dmg.

run the bmc-8.10_update.sh passing the path to the dmg.

Not on my AppleTVs right now so I can't quote the exact path.

If these instructions do not make sense, then you should NOT be doing a manual update as you will not understand if something goes wrong.
