[MAC] XBMC for Mac on PPC (PowerPC) some .AVI videos cause XBMC to crash for me
#1
When I try to open some videos in XBMC they cause it to crash, while other of the same format do not. It is always the same ones that cause the crash. I can't figure out the problem. Will someone with a little more knowlegde help me out with this?

OS X 10.5.7

Mac Mini G4 PPC
1.42 ghz
512 Mb RAM
ATI Radeon 9200

dmg installation

The problem happens only with some file types. When I go to play a video some files cause XBMC to crash while others do not. Some files of this type will open fine, others will not and it's always the same ones that cause XBMC to crash.

Video Codecs Used -> DivX 3 Low
Audio Codecs Used -> AC3
File Format -> AVI

XBMC 9.04.1 r20686M (Compiled May 27, 2009)
Skin: Mediastream, PM3, Project Mayhem III (it happens in all of them)

The PPC build still has problem with some files format.
The videos that make XBMC crash probably don't use the same codecs as the ones that work.
You can check with mediainfo to have the details.

The PPC build is still quite new and users need to report what doesn't work so that we can fix it.
Just like you did.

The easiest would be to send me a short sample of the video that makes the app crash.
Note that I'm going away for 3 weeks tomorrow and I won't have access to my PPC machine. But I'll have access to the internet, so I can get the video.
Will try to fix it when I'm back.

I had the exact same issues as you lehite. I did find that they were less pronounced on 10.5.4 though.

Also, you'll notice that the software renderer on 9.04.1 outputs 16 bit-like video.

From what I've read, the software renderer issue has been fixed in the current SVN build, but there's no plan to take advantage of hardware acceleration on the radeon 9200 on our g4 mini.

We might be able to use an external player (quicktime) to use hardware acceleration, but I was never able to get it to work on the PPC build.

Oh well, it's still very much beta.

I'd really like to compile the PPC version from SVN on my 10.5.8 PowerPC Mac.

Basically, I have followed README.osx -- these are my steps:

Install fresh MacPorts 1.7, compile dependencies after setting universal_archs in macports.conf to just 'ppc'. To be sure I was compiling only for ppc, I installed all the macports packages without the "+universal" parameter.

I followed the instructions line for line until opening Xcode -- I selected 10.5 as the SDK (I do not require a universal, Tiger ready binary), Release as the active configuration, XBMC_ppc.app as the Active target and XBMC_ppc as the Active executable.

I get an error on libcmyth -- I believe the error is an incorrect parameter or something similar.

I remember reading something about requiring the 10.4 SDK so I might try to start from downloading the SVN snapshot, configuring and then building.

Otherwise, can anyone shed any light on what I might be doing wrong?

You should build the 10.4 project, yeah - the 10.5 project may not quite be up to date, as all of us build against 10.4.

Yes, build against 10.4 project. While the 10.5 project is present, it's unsupported as it's not our release build. There really is no reason to build against 10.5, no speed ups, no additional features.

Thanks for the tips. I got the Xcode project to compile using 10.4 SDK and the XBMC_ppc target/executable.

The reason I wanted to compile from SVN was for the video codec problems, though these don't appear to be changed -- I wanted to make sure before posting any reports.

Is there anything I can do to help get these issues resolved? I am not a developer, but I am more than happy to post samples of the files I am having problems with.

What is the best way to create a sample if this is indeed useful?

No news... I need more info to work on the pb.
Can't see much in your log. Please always post the FULL Debug Log.

The easiest for me to fix the pb would be to reproduce it.
For that I need a file that does not work.
Anyone who can provide that?

You need to activate debug logging to post a useful log.
Go to Settings->System->Enable debug logging
In case of crash, please post as well the crashreporter log (see my signature).

I plaid the 4 videos several times and got only one crash. That was with movie2.avi. So will look a bit closer.
But not sure those videos are really representative... There is no sound (I tried with VLC as well).
Sorry I'm picky :-)

So if you or someone else has another video to send, I'll be happy to look at it.
I appreciate you trying to help!

Btw, which OS X are you running?
