[QUESTION] ASRock ION 330
#1
Question
Looking for a new ION and i came across this: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.as...Tpk=asrock

Now that really isn't a bad price but it doesn't seem to come with Bluray which is fine 320GB of space is plenty to back up HD movies so that's fine.

My questions are simply, will this work with XBMC, what route will I need to take to have it boot directly to XBMC, and has anyone else actually used this machine?

Asrock ION 330 works with XBMC.
Search the forum, plenty of users have it and works great.

Boot directly? Windows? Linux?
You can install XBMC Live, that will surely boot in to XBMC directly Smile

Ah i have done a search and wouldnt have actually posted lol if i had found these answers directly, Now as i have only ever really used XBMC on windows as an app i was under the impression XBMC live was something to boot off a CD or w/e. Am I wrong in thinking this, and as it seems to be the most popular of the 2 I'll end up using Linux if anything.

XBMC Live can be installed in a HDD, pen drive or memory card. XBMC Live can be installed in Ubuntu too. Both will boot directly in to XBMC.

In Windows you can put XBMC in the startup or you can mess around and make it boot as a shell, but in windows i'm not sure if asrock ion 330 will play 720p flawlessly.

So would it be cheaper and better to buy this baby: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.as...Tpk=asrock or build my own?

But the question was should I buy from the link above, or should I build it? I', looking for cheap and practical i guess.

That all depends on how much money will a DIY system will cost.

Hi,

In the past I've always built my own HTPC boxes, but this time I went for the ASRock 330 and haven't regretted it for an instant. It works great. Smooth HD playback, silent and it looks real pretty to boot.
Tip: Here's a great howto/script to set up your ASRock machine: http://forum.xbmc.org/showthread.php?tid=55282
I had the whole thing up and running in half an hour.

So you're going for the ASRock? If so I hope you enjoy it as much as I do. What's the price for the BR version in the US? I payed it 350 euro here in The Netherlands.
Another script you may consider is this one: http://forum.xbmc.org/showthread.php?tid=57764
It's a lot more "advanced" than the other one, but is still pretty new.
With a bit of tweaking (commenting out stuff) it does the job as well and adds a few nice details like skins (sorry no blackbolt ones), SMB shares & FTP.

I am gonna go with the ASRock which is gonna cost me around $360.00 US, unless of course I can get it cheaper by building it myself, Equinox is gonna help me see if we can find better deals on parts for it. And to be honest I haven't been able to find a BR on pre-made so that's something I'll have to think on as I want BR in the end BUT I can always backup and BR content to the HDD ...

BluRay "pre-made" is this one: http://www.asrock.com/nettop/overview.as...N%20330-BD . Have one myself, so I'm positive, abolutely positive it exists ;-) .
As far as I know ASRock doesn't build separate ION motherboards, so you'll have to go for a Zotac or Point Of View (or Asus, if you're willing to wait a few weeks) motherboard combined with a case, memory, HD and Optical drive. In the research I did before getting mine all of therse were either more expensive or way less good looking than the ASRock alternative. Of course, if you do find a cheaper solution, let me know... I've lots of friends and coleagues who want to get one of these babies as well...
