On base Ubuntu I have a fine tuned samba, and I see shares with Russian names correctly.
Example: "1992 - Иисус Христос - суперзвезда"
But on XBMC I see same shares with broken letters:
"1992 - ê¿ßÒß òÓ¿ßÔ«ß - ßÒ»ÑÓºóѺñá"
XBMC. Built on Nov 12 2009 (SVN:24548)

Assuming your samba is set up correctly for Russian character with something like this in your smb.conf
unix charset = UTF-8
display charset = UTF-8
dos charset = 866
I find I also have to change the default font in Settings --> Appearance from its default to Arial. The default skin font often doesn't support the characters.

I meen, You don't reed my message :-\
I say: "I have a fine tuned samba".
And without Arial all Rusian string in interface will have broken letters.
