Should I waste my time on this config or should I go and buy some c2d?
Goal is mkv 1080p movies.

Athlon64 3000+
Abit AN8 SLI (NF4 s939)
2x1GB DDR
Geforce 8 series ( some crappy one from 8400-8600 range).
Sound Via SB live digital out ( AC3 to amp)

I intend to run the Live version ofcourse.

Yes - you will be able to use hardware decoding using your gpu. It will offload all of the decoding to your gpu and it does the hardwork.

For reference you can do full 1080p decode using a single core atom, celeron, p4, etc... The cpu is not used.

Cheapy Geforce will do ALL the stuff ?
This means me can underclock !

Pretty much anything from the 83xx up will do it - http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/VDPAU

Be careful with underclocking if your gpu is built into your motherboard as it also underclocks the shared memory the gpu uses, which can cause issues. If its an addon card then no problem.
