Is there a FTP client on the minimal image? Data transfer through SSH is painfully slow.

"apt-get install" will install the package into whichever copy of Linux is running (be it the hard disc or a flash drive), so it will remain across reboots.

What kind of server are you using? Some people have reported problems using SMB sharing on SnowLeopard because the SMB support on that server is flawed. Also check how fast your server is delivering the file - a blu-ray rip can go up to 40Mb/sec, so if you're using something like powerline ethernet you might struggle.

Just need netatalk:
sudo apt-get install netatalk

Guys
I tried netatalk first, but isn't this an afp server rather than an afp client? In any case with netatalk installed I'm getting mount_afp command not found.

Then I tried afpfs-ng however I'm stumped by the install - I am getting errors when running the "make" command : http://pastebin.com/LcbDpajr

Anybody want to help with this?

thanks
Paul

I had problems using SMB with Time Capsule, the SMB client built in the TC randomly stops to work. There are hundred of reports in the Apple support forum, but the only way at the moment is to downgrade the firmware from 7.4.2 to 7.3.2.
Now is working fine so the problem is not in Snow Leopard but in TC,this problem should involve also Airport Extreme but didn't test.
To downgrade follow this, quick and easy: http://theappleblog.com/2009/05/12/publi...ule-7-4-1/
Bad,bad Apple we should ahead not back!

About AFP,i followed many many different tutorials, not result and a devasting headache! Thanks to dafranca and other people here for the help but my linux noobness is too strong i give up and leave the ball to someone more expert.
These are some link,have fun

The debian package for afps-ng should work.
Code:
wget http://sourceforge.net/projects/afpfs-ng/files/afpfs-ng/0.8.1/afpfs-ng_0.8.1-1_i386.deb/download
sudo dpkg -i afpfs-ng_0.8.1-1_i386.deb

Once installed you should have the mount_afp command available.
Code:
xbmc@AppleTV:~$ mount_afp
Usage:
     mount_afp [-o volpass=password] <afp url> <mountpoint>

Yes i have it.
Then i create a dir for my TC

mkdir /home/nas

then mount it

sudo mount_afp afp://(my.tc.user):[mytcpassword]@(my.tc.ip)/Time-Capsule.local/ /home/nas

but result is always
"Mounting 10.0.1.1 from Time-Capsule.local on /home/nas
Could not pick a matching UAM."

Thanks, I was unable to successfully complete the make install so assumed the errors/warnings in the make were significant.

However, sudo dpkg -i afpfs-ng_0.8.1-1_i386.deb worked for me. That's great.

I think I'm having other problems though. Reason I was messing with afp was that using samba and nfs shares, xbmc is crashing frequently when I choose multi-image backgrounds from the share. I wondered if AFP might help.

Here's my crashlog : http://pastebin.com/7tRbMFp3
