When i insert a CD or DVD and press the play button on the lower left corner of XBMC's main menu, i instantly get an error message informing me that XBMC did not find a disk (the exact message in a german-localized XBMC is: "XBMC hat keine Disk gefunden. Bitte Disk einlegen und neu versuchen oder abbrechen."). The dialogue allows me to eject the CD by software, which works, telling me (i presume) that XBMC is using the right device.

Here's the debug info from pressing "eject" in the error message, putting the CD or DVD back into the drive, closing the tray to pressing play again just to get the same error message:

I run mythbuntu 10.04 with all current updates installed.
The CD/DVD plays back without trouble in VLC under the same username that runs XBMC.
Permissions on the optical drive are 0666.

Any help is much appreciated.

I have the same problem, and there are a couple of other similar threads. I don't believe this is an Ubuntu problem as stated here, but a XBMC problem, given that other programs can use the DVD drive just fine. Can't offer more help than that.

Out of desperation i tried to add a "specific local source" as explained here: http://wiki.xbmc.org/index.php?title=Typ...al_Sources even though it is clearly marked as XBox only.

Predictably, it failed.

EDIT: Mods, please merge with the thread linked above. So far, patching ubuntu did not fix the problem, but it seems to be a worthwhile investigation.
