Like the cryptic subject states, I am looking for the cheapest computer that I can get that will have HDMI out and will be able to handle 1080p video playback.
I just purchased the boxee box, and I am pretty disappointed with the way it handles local media. I want to go back to using XBMC, but I don't feel like building an HTPC from scratch.

Acer Revo can be picked up for about $200 and will do everything you need. Basically any Ion based machine will do everything you need.

If you can find at 1600 (even a refurb.) snag it ASAP. I can't find them anywhere. I bought one from Best Computer (reseller on Amazon) yesterday and they shipped it out today. Was a factory refurb in box. It was $198 for the refurb. It appears Acer has discontinued this model and wants us to spend $300+. Most people buying these things are buying them simply for the iON. I don't know why they discontinued the cheaper model when they were selling them like crazy.

I think this is soooo true. There used to be lots of retailers selling the cheap ION nettops. But now its almost worth it to buy a netbook with ion and a screen for cheaper than the equivalent nettop. Serious collusion going on here...

Occasionally I check eBay for the Revo 1600 and see a few pop up for under/around $200. Go for it, if you have an eBay account. These machines are wonderful for the price.
Glad I got mine last year; at the local Best Buy of all places!

At $300 - $400 that they now want for an ion netop, you can almost buy better (granted larger) full PC! That was the thing I liked about Acer, good prices and good quality. The problem with the Zotac and Foxconn boxes is that they are barebones and cost $200, so you still have to buy RAM and a HDD or SSD. It ends up being $300 really fast.
