I'm not sure how to ask this, or even what i'm ultimately after, so I'll state my configuration, and desired end result, and hopefully someone can tell me how to get from [nothing] to [awesome].

I have a file server. It's windows 7. It's currently running ps3 media server and sharing exactly what I want to my ps3, transcodes, and displays on my tv.

I just got a new mac mini. I want to plug it into my tv and use that to play stuff. For browsing the ps3 media center, i was told to look at xbmc. It has a super pretty interface, so I thought, great, install on the mac, and bam, i'm good to go. However when i browse the ps3 media server directories from xbmc, i get 2 folders, which those in itself are incomplete, when I have about 10 folders shared.

Somoene told me I could install xbmc on both the host machine and the mac, and browse the server that way, only adding certain directories.

Could someone tell me the best way to get from nothing to what I'm after? Thanks.

Could someone tell me how to be good at school, driving a car, getting a job, a girlfriend and a happy life ?

Hope you see my irony nasomi and welcome to the forums !

You cant expect others to do all the work for you, you need to get your hands dirty and atleast do some research for your own. Se my signature on links to the xbmc wiki. start reading and come back with detailed question for specific problems.

Do good in school, and get a hot car, the girlfriend and job and happy life will follow.

I understand what you're saying, I just tried not to assume anything, because with my limited current knowledge, anything i said, there is likely a much better way to do it.

I'm assuming xbmc can act as a media server, and serve media files to the lovely video game systems. By that assumption, I also assume that xbmc on another machine will pick up the first xbmc's shares, and be able to browse/play them. Am I correct in this? Also, do you need a display driver to run xbmc? The file server is a remote machine. ie. it sits on a rack with a bunch of other servers in my basement. When I am remote'd into it, i launch xbmc, and it crashes.

The error says:
CApplication:::Create() failed - check log file and that it is writable

I have no idea what this means, or where the log file may be to check, or what log file I'm after even.

look nasomi, XBMC is not intended to be a media server, it the opposite actually. XBMC is a frontend to watch and experience media pulled from servers, or locally on harddrive.

Not its purpose. PS3mediaserver is the job for that.

XBMC is a program that allows you to turn HTPCs into media appliances. By design XBMC has an easy to navigate interface by remote, so that the non-nerds in our lives can enjoy our large collections without having to know how to pull up the DLNA server on the ole PS3.

See, that's why i asked. I was told that it was a media server as well, but after searching the FAQ, wiki, and otherwise, i couldn't figure out how, and that's why i asked in here. I thought there might be a compatibility issue, since when I launched xbmc, and viewed the ps3 media server, it did not list everything the media server was sharing.
