Custom Build or Nettop? (Let the battle begin)
#16
Hi eskro, I have a few questions about your builds :

- What is the power consumption ?
- It's noisy?
- These builds may remain switched on 24/24 ? (for NAS, web server, etc)
- How works the HDMI output ?
- Which remote control do you recommend ?

well, the builds #4 #5 & #6 all uses very 'green' power supplies!
they use the Antec EarthWatts 80+ Bronze Certified!!
Build #3 uses the Antec 350W 80+ Certified also!
And build #1 & #2 uses generic PSU's...
which is why the price is also lower...
no secrets here....
if you wanna read more about the 80+ Efficiency level certification regarding Power Supplies.
i suggest you click --> Here!

ced64k Wrote:It's noisy?
Depends on what you mean by noisy...
what may be noisy for you might be low noise for me...
If anything, just get new fans!
who doesn't do that anyways?

ced64k Wrote:These builds may remain switched on 24/24? (for NAS, web server, etc)
Those builds were to show users that they can greatly benefit
from building their own custom HTPC rather then buying a NETTOP for pretty much the same price!
So what i mean by that is, yes, they can stay on 24/7,
but if you plan on using one of those to act as your NAS server,
i've got another build i've put up with my friend Omar just for that!
As these here are oriented towards being used as HTPC....

ced64k Wrote:How works the HDMI output?
Well HDMI-out is to connect your video card to your HDTV's HDMI-in!
this way, your HDTV becomes your HTPC Monitor!
Another way is also to connect your video card's HDMI-out to your A/V Receiver's HDMI-in
and then connect your A/V Receiver's HDMI-out to your HDTV's HDMI-in!
Good thing about doing so is the ability to listen to HD Audio!

ced64k Wrote:Which remote control do you recommend?
There's tons of threads about remote controls on the forum...
i can't recommend one specifically....
The one i like is the DELL GYRATION RF REMOTE
because if you ever played the Nintendo Wii,
it has the same point&play cursor controls!
I suggest you create a new thread about "which remote",
im sure you'll have great help from the users on board!

that's a pretty useless thread to me, sorry. At the end, everybody has very diferent needs, budget and opinions.

I have an Asrock ION 330ht and wouldn't change it. It works wonders, does all what I need it to do, it has dvd, it's very small, it's nice, has built in IR receiver, it's not loud, it's wasn't expensive. I mean, for my needs, it's perfect! It could be a little more quiet, but I actually sleep with the machine on without any troubles.

Yeah, your riggs are cheaper, are more powerfull, are 3d and bitstream capable.. and what? I don't need that. From the posted, I only like the silverstone case and it's much bigger than the 330ht.

As I already said, at the end every one has different needs. THE ONE perfect HTPC doesn't exist, but the many perfect HTPCs do. Different people, different needs, different likes.

i said that many times myself!
In the end, if your is happy with your HTPC, then everyone's happy!

PatrickVogeli Wrote:I only like the silverstone case and it's much bigger than the 330ht
there's many cases to choose from,,,
those were only suggestions...

never said it does!
these are only suggestions!
im not forcing anything on anyone here...
Anybody's free to swap the parts they dont like!
The idea was mainly to open the mind about building your own desired HTPC...
and show what could be done at what price...
i think i achieved my goal judging by the numbers of PMs i received!

I believe EsKRo is just trying to point out suggestions that are out there. No one needs to go by them. To some people actually this thread comes in handy to see what can be done. I enjoy reading his stuff.

Thanks for your reply Smile

I made another build, because some of your components aren't available in Europe :
Image
[mobo] GIGABYTE GA-880GM-UD2H ($90)
[cpu] AMD Athlon X2 3.0GHz 65W ($61)
[gpu] integrated
[case+psu] MAXINPOWER B299CAL000 250W ($65)
TOTAL: $216

and also :
[ram] Kingston 2GB 240-Pin DDR3 SDRAM DDR3 1333 (PC3 10600) 22,99$
[hd] SAMSUNG Spinpoint F3 500GB 7200 RPM 3.5" 49,99$
[cooler] Scythe Big Shuriken SCBSK-1000 120mm CPU Cooler 34,99$

What do you think ? Integrated 880GM is enough powerful for playing 1080p mkv with XBMC Live ? GeForce GT430 is better ? I chose this mobo because I need an eSATA port and it has a build in HDMI port.

I was thinking of buying this motherboard instead as it has the optical audio out instead of analog ports...Thoughts?

Also do I need to buy a CPU or case fan for build #2?

I'm starting to build the set-up with the parts in your first build but I'm having some trouble with the gpu and the case. I tried to put the ASUS GeForce GT430 into the Pixxo CM-9E8A-Black 450W case but the gpu seems too big to fit in the case. Am I doing something wrong or is the gpu too wide to fit into that case?

I can't imagine how you could put it wrong so looks like gpu is too big to fit there. You may want to try this - it should work fine on your igp

your GPU should fit but u need to install the low profile brackets...
u bought the ASUS GT430 Low Profile right?

Yea i believe I bought the right one. I bought this one from new egg

What are the low profile brackets? Sorry I'm a little new at the computer installs. The gpu came with two small silver pieces, are those the brackets?

No love for Atom based boards?

One thing to consider when building these is power consumption. Although it may be a similar price to a nettop it'll cost you more over time in power bills. If you plan on doing more on your htpc than run XBMC then definitely go this route, but if not the ION platform is more than adequate, whether it be in a nettop or custom built PC. The problem with using processors like the ones recommended in this thread and having another non-onboard video card is heat generation, you're generally going to need a larger case or more noisy fans to keep all the hardware safe.
