mojoted Wrote:Thanks. I'm new this arena. I saw somewhere on a thread that you could see the XBMC version in System Info, but now I realize you can only see the version of iOS Darwin there. So I see that Darwin version 10.6 debuted on January 6th. Any idea why the Atv2 is running 10.4 and not 10.6?

1) don't confuse OSX versions with iOS version, they are different.
2) 10.6.x OSX versions have no relation with iOS 10.4.

For the XBMC version, you look in XBMC when running it.

Also Apple numbers the GUI visible version differently than the iOS version.

Darwin describes the kernel/filesystem.

Please add:

How do I block ATV from prompting for updates, and crashing XBMC?

1. Edit /etc/hosts, and add the following lines

127.0.0.1 appldnld.apple.com
127.0.0.1 mesu.apple.com
127.0.0.1 appldnld.apple.com.edgesuite.net
127.0.0.1 itunes.apple.com.edgesuite.net

(optional to add steps to install nano, and note that a return needs to be added on extra line)..

I'm just gonna throw this out there for anybody that happens to care about these forums:

There are FAR too many stickies in this section. For new users, they need one, maybe two threads to check in order to try and catch themselves up to speed before they go off and create another "I can't get this feature to work" thread. Seems to me, most, if not all of the other stickies could be consolidated into this one and maybe the "current issues" thread. At the rate that things are being stickied around here, pretty soon the front page will be 2/3rds full of stickies and there will be no room for normal threads.

Just my two cents, but I think it's something to think about. Overuse of stickies ends up negating the point they're stickied to begin with.

Agreed, the following stickies should be consolidated into the FAQ. It'd make finding info easier but it'd take a fair bit of work to organize the info.
XBMC for iOS current issues at a glance
HOW TO Stop Apple TV 2 from checking and bugging you about updates
HOWTO Enable BT Keyboard support
AppleTV2 crashes

I haven't seen OP in awhile.

What I would love to see is someone combine all this info together that organizes FAQ and everything from the stickies onto the wiki pageproperly. Then we can link the Wiki page and have discussion of what to add here, which makes more sense anyways imo.

This whats up so far:
http://wiki.xbmc.org/index.php?title=Ins...MC_on_ATV2
http://wiki.xbmc.org/index.php?title=XBM...n_Apple_TV

Not much on the ATV2.

I will rise to the challenge probably when the buildbot takes over the atv2 builds, but if anyone else gets a chance, feel free to take a stab at it!

FOR IOS: xbmc.log: /var/mobile/Library/Preferences/xbmc.log (be sure to enable debugging)
For troubleshooting and bug reporting please make sure you read this first.
Always read the XBMC online-manual, FAQ and search the forum before posting.

I spent some time cleaning up the wiki. The atv1 and atv2 info was getting a bit too entangled and references to atv2's FAQ didn't exist in as many places as it should. Got most of them but wasn't able to edit this locked page, maybe keith or someone else with appropriate permissions could add the iOS specific FAQ (http://wiki.xbmc.org/index.php?title=XBM...ecific_FAQ) below the XBMC for Mac entry:

http://wiki.xbmc.org/index.php?title=Fre..._Questions

I'll put some time in on the iOS specific FAQ the next time I come down with an equally severe bout of boredom... should be within a couple days.

Added! Thx for the editing, I'll try to add some too.

A friend asked me how to install a 3rd party repo onto their ATV2. I couldn't find a nice step-by-step instruction post on this forum so I wrote some instructions myself. I thought it might be good to stick it up here for everybodys' benefit, so here it is:

The easiest way to add or remove files from your ATV2 without delving into the command line is to use a SFTP program like Filezilla, or Cyberduck. Personally, I use Filezilla on Windows so this is what my description will focus on. The procedure shouldn't vary that much if you're using a different OS.

Method:
  1. Download, install, and run the Filezilla Client program from the link above
  2. In the boxes near the top of the Filezilla window enter the following details (here's an example of the Filezilla window for reference: link):

Host: enter the IP address of your ATV2
    Username: mobile
Password: alpine (this is the default, if you've changed the password then enter whatever you changed it to)
    Port: 22
  3. Hit the "Quick Connect" button
  4. The files and folders on your ATV2 should now be listed in the "Remote site" frames on the right-hand side.
  5. navigate to the folder
    /private/var/mobile/
  6. transfer the add-on zip file into this folder*
  7. In XBMC go to the Add Ons manager and choose to “install from zip”
  8. select the “Home Folder”
  9. find and select the zip file you want to install
  10. Done!

* NOTE: if you find, in step 6, that you cannot upload the file, try logging in again using the username “root”. After you have completed the transfer SSH into your ATV2 (UN: root, PW: alpine) and run the following command to restore file permissions
Code:
chown -R mobile.mobile /var/mobile/Library/Preferences/XBMC

Probably makes sense to add a reference or info on the 4.3 missing dependency issue, assuming you're ok with 4.3 stuff getting into the FAQ:

http://forum.xbmc.org/showpost.php?p=766...stcount=22

Btw, the faq has answer misspelled at the end, awnser I think was the spelling if I recall correctly.

In case anyone's interested in following what's happening with the audioengine work that's going on here's the link. It's interesting, if only as an aside, in light of the 4.3.1 audio issues that are being discussed... although the cause there appears to be jailbreak related (and will likely be fixed in a new pwnagetool, GP) EDIT: Already fixed in the latest Seas0npass.

Just to let you know that this should be fixed with an update to nitoTV (nitoTV > Settings > Update nitoTV) to version 0.6.7, which "fixes the repository issues" as per the changelog.

This should now make the PwnageTool jailbreak on par with the seas0npass jailbreak, though there would probably be no harm in recommending the latter over the former.

Good to know it's fixed in the latest nitoTV but not everyone installs it so also good to have the manual fix.

For iOS 4.3, Pwnagetool 4.3 has issues with SMB shares and no audio (according to the forums here) so until there's a new release Seas0npass is still the better choice in that case. For iOS 4.2.1, I'd probably use Pwnagetool 4.2 though.
