The lag in the menu's is a known issue, and is currently being worked on.
You could try re-encoding the file using Handbrake. The new 0.9.5 has an AppleTV 2 preset that may work. I have some 60fps recordings from my HDHomerun that I am going to try running through that to see if I can get them to play smoothly.
Also remember, the iOS port of XBMC is still in it's infancy stages... once this gets merged into the main branch we should start seeing some major improvements!
