Help No sound with Samsung HDTV

I wonder if I swapped my 37" Sammy with my Dads would he notice he had a different TV set hehe.

Seriously though I will try using my Dads 37" Samsung TV with the cloned PC. If that works I am truly out of ideas as to why it does not work with my Samsung and I really haven't got the cash to go get a new TV at the moment.

uNi

I have not tried that yet. was messing about getting it working with the 19" Samsung as a test.

Could be still worth doing what I suggest with the Userdata just to be absolutely sure nothing from the cloning process has left something in one of the xml's that the HDMI link to that TV doesn't agree with.

Yes I agree its worth testing, I will try and do what you suggested

Thanks

The only thing that pops to mind is that some devices need to be connected during install to be detected properly. Cloning uses the settings from previous devices in alsa, and must be recreated to overwrite any existing.

This is why I said before back to my forst post to purge alsa-utils and libasound2 and resinatll again and go through the motions of alsamixer with and while that device/TV is connected.

Yes I think you are probably correct. But I wasn't sure how to do that.

He mentions Ubuntu in the 1st sentence and several times after as well, but yes probably would have been better placed in the Linux forum.

jjd-uk I can confirm that deleting the guisettings.xml file and rebooting the PC has had no affect on the problem. Its gone back to the default skin now and I double checked the audio settings were correctly set, then played an album and same deal no sound.

I will have to backup the userdata folder and you are saying to delete its entire contents ?

Thanks

Yes delete the entire folder/contents which is why I suggest backing it up for a quick restore if no effect.

Nah its just the same after wiping out the entire userdata folder. So what does that tell you? Its not a problem in XBMC ?

Think I need to try Uni's suggestion if I can figure out what the right commands are.

Thank again.

The idea is to purge (removing any config files) and reinstall alsa-utils and libasound2

Code:
sudo apt-get remove --purge alsa-utils libasound2 -y
sudo apt-get install alsa-utils libasound2 -y

and a once over alsamixer making sure nothing is muted, I presume you know that because its been covered in wiki and forums.

Thanks will give it a go in a bit.

Yes I know about un-muting stuff in Alsamixer, we covered that in the install script thread.

OK I ran the commands to uninstall and install alsa and then rebooted.

Now XBMC is not opening, I get the login prompt, if I login and then type XBMC to launch it it says

program XBMC is currently not installed. You can install it by typing

apt-get install xbmc.

Not sure what went wrong here.

I then ran the command to install XBMC. and now it says unable to open display need graphics driver etc.

Think I will restore the Acronis image and try again.

That doesnt sound right at all, did by chance removing alsa-utils remove xbmc? And even if it did it wouldnt remove the video driver, very odd.

Yeah not what I expected either but seems to have done that. Will restore image tomorrow and try to run your suggested commands again. Maybe messing with the userdata folder screwed it up.

I restored the True Image again on to second PC, I then proceeded to change the static IP and hostname and the name of it in XBMC. I also removed lcdproc as the second PC has no LCD display unlike the first PC, I changed the rc_keymap to get the remote working properly etc. At this point the second PC is all setup and running with XBMC and just like the first PC downstairs.

I then backed up the second PC in this state, so I can restore more quickly next time without having to reconfigure the above types of settings each time.

Anyways I then ran the commands again to uninstall alsa and reinstall:

Code:
xbmc@xbmc02:~$ sudo apt-get remove --purge alsa-utils libasound2 -y
[sudo] password for xbmc:

I then rebooted at this point, XBMC then does not load and I just get a command prompt, if I login and type XBMC it again says XBMC is not installed, so somehow that command I ran is taking off XBMC.

I then ran the command to install alsa

Code:
xbmc@xbmc02:~$ sudo apt-get install alsa-utils libasound2 -y

After another reboot still no XBMC, so I installed XBMC again and rebooted again. This time it did not say there was no graphics installed.

XBMC then opened OK and is 12.0 version. I double checked that the audio output device and other audio settings were still correct, which there were. And I turned up the master vol in alsamixer!

When playing an album I still have the same problem however no sound.

I think I will go get my dad's 37" Samsung TV and try it on that one as a test.

As I said yesterday the cloned XBMC PC works on two other TV's OK no problems just not this 37" Samsung, which makes me think that the cloning process is not the issue ?

Thanks
