After downloading XBMC I get an error when I try to open it. The error reads, CApplication::create()failed check log file and that it is writable. can anyone offer help?

Reboot the computer. Also update your graphics driver.

Also do not try to run it over Remote Desktop, if that is what you did. Most likely it is that you do not have a proper driver for your video card.
