DVD Playback Fails
#1
Trying to play DVD movie and it hangs/doesn't play at all doesn't crash XBMC now though with this version)

I haven't had DVD playback working basically ever. Hopefully looking at the log something will jump out that I need to change. If others have working DVD playback hopefully this is something on my setup that I can change/fix. Let me know...

Ubuntu 8.04
Intel Core2Duo E4300
PPA install
SVN: 15111

DVDPlayback works fine here, may want to try PM3 skin. Also, I don't see where you made any attempt to play a dvd in that log, so make sure you pastebin the right one.

Crap, you are right about the pastebin. Not sure how it was the wrong one but I will paste in the real one later tonight. From memory the error involves "libdvdnav cannot play xyz" and an error involving libdvdcss not being able to play or find the media.

I'll get the real log in there tonight, sorry for the confusion. If problems with libdvdnav and libdvdcss remind you of some other errors that you know how to fix let me know but it is pretty vague.

This is not the exact log file from my machine, but this is much more like what I saw last night:

libdvdread: Using libdvdcss version 1.2.9 for DVD access
libdvdnavBig GrinVDOpenFileUDF:UDFFindFile /VIDEO_TS/VIDEO_TS.IFO failed
libdvdnavBig GrinVDOpenFileUDF:UDFFindFile /VIDEO_TS/VIDEO_TS.BUP failed
libdvdread: Can't open file VIDEO_TS.IFO.
libdvdnav: Using dvdnav version 0.1.10-xine from http://xine.sf.net
libdvdnav: DVD Title:
libdvdnav: DVD Serial Number:
libdvdnav: DVD Title (Alternative):
libdvdnav: Unable to find map file '/home/maint/.dvdnav/.map'
libdvdnav: vm: faild to read VIDEO_TS.IFO

Are you trying to play the DVD from a .ISO file or from a path on hard disk ?

Please try this :

Code:
isoinfo -i /mnt/videos/DVD1.ISO  -l

and post the output.

I will have to post the more accurate log when I get home tonight. I am trying to play a VIDEO_TS folder path (not .iso). I found this error sample because it resembled what I was having problems with. Virtually all of my stored DVDs are in VIDEO_TS folder format though and not .iso.

Sounds like http://trac.xbmc.org/ticket/4665. Seems to be a LINUX only issue .. i'll try to fix it asap.

Yes... I looked through the debug log attached to that ticket and it looks exactly like the problem I saw. Thanks for checking into this. XBMC has been awesome but it will be way better without having to remember which movies are DVD and which are other types.

Are you having problems reading VIDEO_TS folder, or .iso, or both ?

Over here, .isos play fine.
From VIDEO_TS folder, however, it's another story. To work around, I had to do a small hack in the source code.

I haven't tried any iso files as all my stuff is saved in VIDEO_TS folders.

Thanks for being clear, concise and accurate with your initial problem description. "DVD Playback fails" would lead most to believe playing a DVD from disc was failing... Try harder next time.

Thanks for the constructive feedback.

ubikdood, I saw that you seemed to have a fix to this problem. Is this something that can be rolled out to the PPA or is this something that might show up on the newest SVN?

(Inhale... exhale... )

It's a one-liner change in the source code, sorry. I'm not a xbmc developer *, so it won't show up on SVN.

* - Which I really regret, since it would allow me to cast er... more constructive replies ! |-)
