Upgraded to Dharma, dropping a lot of frames

rampar Wrote:sudo apt-get install update libvdpau1 nvidia-current-modaliases

Worked brilliantly. None of the other tips/tricks found here seemed to cure the problem for me and I'd reached my wit's end. I wish now that I hadn't already ordered replacement RAM that I recently found on Zotac's "tested list" as a last ditch attempt to fix the problem. It should be here tomorrow. Meh... I'll just build another box. Wink Thank you rampar!

Is there a newer version of libvdpau1 out there for ubuntu? I am having the exact same problem, except Ubuntu tells me I have the most up to date version of the file.

My setup is as follows:

Ubuntu 10.10
XBMC standalaone 10.0 (Dharma)
Zotac ION2 ID11
2 GB RAM, 160GB HD

I've tried adding the ppa but it then gives out an error saying it failed to connect due to the repository not responding, or not existing.

1080p videos drop frames fairly regularly now, whereas before the Dharma upgrade (I was on 9.11) everything was smooth as butter.

I notice most are using the LiveCD as opposed to Ubuntu - does XBMC use it's own version of libvdpau1? Any advice here would be appreciated!

Been fighting the same issue on multiple PC's for almost a week now. Problems all started after a simultaneous upgrade to Dharma Final and 260.19.x NVIDIA drivers. Took the holiday weekend and totally re-installed both systems from scratch so unfortunately I only have the current logs, settings, revisions, etc. Re-verified libvdpau1 and other packages noted above are installed and at the latest revision available on the nvidia-vdpau and x-swat PPA's.

Most videos seem to work fine after setting:
"Interlaced handling" = "None"
"Video Scaling Method" = "Auto" (although "Bilinear" and "Bicubic" also work)
"Sync playback to display" = Disabled
"Video post-processing" = Disabled
"Render method" = "Auto"
"View Mode" = "Normal"
VDPAU = Enabled

PC1 (Front)
Hardware: AMD Phenom X2 720, 2GB RAM, NVIDIA GT220
Distribution/Version: Ubuntu Lucid and Ubuntu Maverick
Architecture: Default AMD64 kernels. On Maverick, 2.6.35-22-generic and 2.6.35-24-generic. Currently working on custom version of 2.6.36.2 kernel.
Install Method: PPA (ppa:team-xbmc)
SVN Revision: 10.0 r35648
Instructions to Reproduce the Problem: Limited testing since re-installation, but ok so far. Will report back.
Logs: XBMC Debug, xorg.conf xorg.log:
Video/Audio Codecs: MPEG2 (ATSC in from MythTV and a DVD), MPEG4 (MKV, M4V, and MP4), and DIVX (DiVX 5.x and Xvid).

PC2 (Lower)
Hardware: Pentium 4 3.2 GHz, 2GB RAM, NVIDIA GeForce 8400 PCI
Distribution/Version: Ubuntu Lucid and Ubuntu Maverick
Architecture: Default i386 kernels. Currently 2.6.35-24-generic
Install Method: PPA (ppa:team-xbmc)
SVN Revision: 10.0 r35648
Instructions to Reproduce the Problem: It is still necessary on occasion to toggle other settings which isn't helping with the wife factor. Such as "Render method" and "Sync playback to display". But honestly losing track of what combinations and patterns at this point. Also can't modify "View Mode" to anything but "Normal" without seeing the issue re-appear regardless of what other settings are attempted. This system is streaming files via NFS off PC1. Originally via 802.11n. Thought it was a wireless issue, so changed to a wired Gigabit link. Tested throughput with iperf at 512Mb on average. No errors shown on ifconfig, currently almost 8GB of data with no errors.
Logs: XBMC Debug, xorg.conf xorg.log:
Video/Audio Codecs: MPEG2 (ATSC in from MythTV and a DVD), MPEG4 (MKV, M4V, and MP4), and DIVX (DiVX 5.x and Xvid).

Not sure if this is something with XBMC or the NVIDIA drivers, haven't been able to test independent of XBMC yet. Either way, does seem as though there is a change from even the Dharma Beta and Release Candidates in video scaling and/or interlacing resulting in a few other similar reports as posted in the past week or so:
Turn off De-Interlacing
Turn off Composting
Unknown

Any thoughts, suggestions, or assistance is appreciated. If additional information would be useful please let me know.

I have had nothing but problems since upgrading to Dharma Final.

Pulling my hair out. Doesn't help the 'Wife Acceptance Factor'.

XBMC live 10.00
AMD Athlon™ II X2 250 Processor
Cool n Quiet turned off running at 3ghz
2 Gig ram
8400 GS PCIe video card and latest x-swat drivers.
using component out

I reloaded once already, was ready to swap video cards from 8400 GS to 240GT HDMI, but other posters having similar problems.

I noticed it on some newer MKV's.

Please turn on debug logging in XBMC and repost the logs.

Here also frame drops after switching from 9.11 to Dharma final on an asrock 330. Running xbmc live installed on an ssd, playing from an external harddisk. Haven't had time to log yet. What I notice is that xbmc seems to have no issue playing the file (very low cpu scores) but every approx. 4/5 mins I lose two frames. It seems like it is always in the same parts of the files so I blamed the files at first. Will investigate further, reproduce and post logs.

Update: Here is a log and an update:
http://pastebin.com/b9HUMfJt

I turned on debugging, started the wrong file first (episode 6), stopped it and started episode 5. It asked me to resume and I recalled finding a spot with a problem. Resuming there I ended up right before the part that I saw stuttering twice. I pressed guide to see the dropped frames onscreen as well, and it occured in the exact spot. I stopped it and downloaded the logfile. I browsed it but can't make much of it other then I see what I pressed on remote etc.

There are some warnings around 21:51:00 right before I pressed stop, so must be about where it skipped.
Could be my issue is unrelated, but maybe that can be ruled out. I witnessed skips on 4 files so far.

I checked the file in windows in mediaplayer homecinema and don't get any framedrops there. I know that is not decisive but if it had then it would be a fileproblem.

With debug on, it is showing the fps start out at 30 then drop down to 10 and even as low as 4fps with just the home screen.

I switched back to the 195 driver, still stuttering on high bitrate mkv.

An ordinary 700Meg xvid works fine

Post the debug log file please for the developers If you don't know how there are stickies. Basically I Use ftp to log on to xbmc, get the log and paste it on pastebin.com.

Changed out video card from 8400GS Component to 240GT HDMI, problem gone.

Used the script from the forums to detect the modes for HDMI HD TV.

Hey.

Just an little update.

Today i installed a new ssd and used xbmcfreaks xbmclive mavrick cd and that one is ubunto 10.10 based and holds the nvidia 260.21.09 drivers and libvdpau 4.5, watched some series and movies, drops 5-10 only at the beginning. Its smooth sailing now.

Im on asrock ion330 and a big thx to the developers for making xbmc so nice Big Grin

So several solutions: installing newer vdpau on live cd, swapping vidcard and running a different xbmc live distro from xbmcfreak. Are there any clues in my log? Am downloading the xbmcfreak iso but if there is a problem here I think we should feed it back so it can be fixed in next live version.

I could also update my vdpau as done in this thread but not sure why that version was not included in live 10? Does it come with other problems, which would mean I'd swap one problem for another?
