"Smooth gui navigation (2000 movies and 200 tv-show library on server"
NUC with openELEC

Raspberry Pi would work but won't be smooth

NUC would probably be best, but between that an the pi (in price terms) the Amazon Firetv gives a very nice smooth and fast gui, and does what you want.

I like Zotac Zbox devices, price would be $250+ as well though.

Have you look into the Asus Chromebox? $179. Not sure if it can do all your requirements but do not see why not.

I am eyeing the FTV, but I keep hearing it is not quite there yet...

Does Amazon Firetv plays 1080p? since there is Android limitation on playing back in 720p even if the material is in 1080p....

Where on earth did you get that info? There's no such "OS level" limitation in Android and yes FTV can apparently playback 1080P files fine.

What FTV cannot do currently (and maybe ever);

1. HD audio bitstream or full decode
2. Fully FF/REW with remote control
3. 1080P/24 FPS but can apparently do 1080P/60 fps using 3:2 pulldown just fine
4. VC1 bug - VC1 does not play properly, neither does MPEG2.

MPEG2 is playing fine for me. Have tried OTA HD caps, both 720p and 1080i, up to about 18Mbps. I also have a Japanese satellite 1080i cap around 24Mbps that plays fine. I believe it's only software playback (no hardware acceleration) for MPEG2, but playback seems solid.

It also currently doesn't switch automatically between 50 and 60Hz for 50 and 60/24Hz content (Android limitation?) Does it offer 50Hz output (or being US-only at the moment is it fixed at 60Hz?)

50Hz output is pretty vital for us in Europe - our DVDs and SD/HDTV are in that format.

It has a 720 and 1080 50Hz option available in the resolution settings

but it won't auto-set the refresh rate when playing a combination of 50/60fps media. So you have to manually set the refresh rate each time if it doesn't match the file you want to play.
