When I duplicated the above post from the iOS sub-forum I forgot to mention if these solutions were necessary for Mac Lion to Mac (any version), or Mac Lion to Windows. So here's some copy pasta from the original iOS thread:

Accessing SMB sharing from a Lion server from within XBMC is a no go no matter what OS the user is on. However, in Windows you can locally map/mount SMB shares and then point XBMC to those "local" drives. In Mac OS X you can do this same local-mount trick with SMB or AFP.

Mac/Windows XBMC users (client side of the Lion share) will still likely want to explore the solutions listed in the main post of this thread. They are the most cross-platform friendly as each of these solutions are using XBMC itself to make the network connection. If you use mysql DB sharing in XBMC then you will have to use these solutions.

Scratch some of that. I've been told that XBMC on Windows does not use its own special SMB client, and thus should not be effected at all. The problem still stands for Linux, iOS, and OSX.

OSX/iOS is using samba 3.6.0 but while smb2 is listed as working (if enabled), it is only present in server side and not smbclient side. So smb2 under 3.6.0 is a bust.

I have found that using FTP solves all my problems. What is against using this protocol even when the SMB problems are solved?

Just incase someone comes across this thread by itself:

New solution: XBMC now includes an AFP (Apple File Protocol) client! See http://forum.xbmc.org/showthread.php?tid=109723

All AFP issues (iOS or Mac OS X) should be reported in that thread for the time being.
